Schroeder is a geographer at the IPUMS Center for Data Integration at the Institute for Social Research and Data Innovation (ISRDI) at the University of Minnesota, where he has worked since 2009, serving primarily as a project manager for the National Historical Geographic Information System (NHGIS). Schroeder directs NHGIS metadata harmonization and time series production, and he leads the specification, review and documentation of new NHGIS data products, website features, and metadata processing tools. He also contributes to the IPUMS USA by leading the development of integrated geographic variables for U.S. census microdata. His primary research interests are in methods of spatio-temporal analysis and visualization of census data. A major focus has been the development and assessment of areal interpolation methods to estimate how characteristics measured in one census are distributed among a different census’s reporting areas. He continues seeking out new ways to model and illustrate population distributions and trends effectively.
